Alice reads in her history book that the zones brought safety after the war and the Cataclysm. She asks Caleb why people gave up their freedom for it. “Because they were afraid,” he says. Alice rolls the pencil between her fingers and looks at him. “That isn’t an answer.”

A Morning with Alice.
Caleb drives the car himself, and Alice wants to know why he will not let it steer. “Because I don’t feel like watching a second system think today. The first one is sitting to my right.” Alice turns to him. “Unsubstantiated claim.”

Caleb finds Alice’s name in a message from an unknown sender. He is told to come alone and say nothing to the Officers, though they are standing right beside him. He takes his sister’s scarf when he sets out.
